The Ghent Film Week is often referred to as Europe's most obscure film festival. An island oasis for art amidst a sea of commercialism. Sure, it's modest in form, as we mainly focus on screening films and less on the glitter and glamour. The festival focuses on contemporary cinema and video art and places its films where they belong – within the vibrant context of other art forms.
Mars (United Kingdom) by Shelley Hopkins
‘Mars’ is inspired by the wonders of space travel and transports us to a cosmic realm where we witness the birth of supernovas and planets against a background of stars. The dynamic explosion of visual textures align with Sounding's ambient beats, transforming organic material filmed in a Petri dish into an imagined universe of shifting and evolving forms. The film moves between the intimate scale of its analogue origins and the vastness of an unknowable universe, evoking both cosmic forces and the tiny, beautiful rhythms of life.

As they move through the dense forest, the environment seems to breathe with them, and the land begins to reveal fragments of the community’s memory. Through a ritual act, Alzou seeks to reconnect with the valley’s living forces, attempting to rekindle the bond between nature, spirit, and those who once inhabited this sacred place.
